Finally talked with the genetic counselor and got the blood draw completed at the Bellevue Medical Center. Thank goodness I didn’t have to go to UNMC for this. It was quick.
The results of this testing showed I had a mutation in the BRCA2 and CHEK2 genes. BRCA2 is typically higher risk for breast cancers and colon cancers. Pancreatic cancer is further down the list. So this was telling us this cancer was most likely passed on at birth from one of the parents. I was let know that anyone in my family could get tested at not cost for these two genes up until May 21.
My dad had the testing done in late December and did not have the mutations. So my mother passed the mutations down to me. I notified all of my relative on my mother’s side about the availability of testing and encouraged them to get it done since this appears to be coming from that side of the family.
